Oh the drama

So there's a "Which LJ user would you punch in the mouth?" meme circulating in the LJ mommy sphere. Obviously par for the course of this particular internet hate machine. But the thing I'm finding hilarious is the number of people who are unwilling to come out and say "I don't like so-and-so" if they think there's a possibility of that person seeing the comment. IDGI, if you don't like somebody on the internet why not own it? It's not like you have to engage with them or have them in your space. You can say "I don't like X and here's why" and keep it moving with no real repercussions (social or otherwise) in a way that you might not be able to offline. I know there are tons of people doing the meme with my name in their head (if not onscreen), and I'm not particularly fussed. It's not like I'm unaware of the fact that I piss people off. Is this some bit of feminine psychology that I'm failing to grasp? Or are there a lot of cowards floating around?

Dulce Et Decorum Est

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of disappointed shells that dropped behind.

GAS! Gas! Quick, boys!-- An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And floundering like a man in fire or lime.--
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,--
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

"Bisphenol-A, a chemical found in hard, clear plastic used to make everything from baby bottles to food packaging, may increase the risk of erectile dysfunction and other sexual problems in male factory workers exposed to large amounts of the substance, according to a study conducted in China.

The health effects of BPA have been hotly debated; although some studies have linked BPA to a risk of brain damage, birth defects, hyperactivity, heart disease, early puberty, obesity, and prostate cancer, other research suggests that the low level of exposure from plastics doesn't pose a health risk to adults. (The picture is less clear for children.)

Well. Anybody still want to drink bottled water? (I don't imagine many of us do but this is a good reminder to buy a proper water bottle)

Thank You to Vets!

Happy Veterans Day, everyone!

While I tend to be anti-war, I sincerely appreciate everyone who serves or has ever served our country in the Armed Forces. Without your dedication and sacrifice, our county wouldn't be what it is. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart and honor you and your sacrifice this day.

Special honors to my blood-kin who have served: my nephew, my brother, my father, most of my uncles-- especially Uncle Gordie, who served in the Navy, the Merchant Marines, and the Coast Guard -- my grandfather, who was gassed in WWI (though he still fathered 16 children and lived to 83).

Thank you to all my friends who serve or have served -- I'm afraid I'll miss some names if I try to list you all, though. You know who you are. Sending you gigantic, grateful uber-hugs.

Huzzah!!

After an enlightening conversation earlier about the appeal of thug lit, I find myself tempted to convert one of my soap opera fanfics and see if it sells. Because going by the discussion I had it sure sounds like the draw is about representation, not just race but also socioeconomic status all framed in that same escapist mindset as any soap fan. But it comes with the added bonus of not only having black leads, but black leads that have faced the same struggles as the reader. I will have to ponder this some more later. The kids are off tomorrow so I suspect a trip to the Field Museum is in the offing. Expect to be subjected to more pictures because I want a shot of kid #2's face when he gets to the big dinosaur fossil. The intro to the dragon story is officially on my hate list, but I hope to fix it soon (along with getting caught up on some other things) now that I'm past this whole dance I had to do with VA's office side. I need another me to run my life while this me focuses on the creative.

Two-Party System

I favor approval voting or IRV chiefly because they mean we might get to bring back The Bull Moose party.

I want you to want me...

Oy- today turned into a headache and a half, unintentionally, entirely due to trying to get the H1N1 vaccine.

The swine flu vaccine rant )

In completely unrelated news, except that it also involves farm animals, I'm toying with the idea of giving things out of the World Vision catalog for Christmas. I always get talked out of doing things like this every year, though, because my mom insists that my grandma would prefer material gifts. I don't get that at all. But... anyway, I have to go because the baby's crying.
